Your First Menu Item

Adding a New Item

From your dashboard, click the "Add Menu Item" button. This opens the menu item form where you will enter all the details your customers need to see.

Each menu item has five key fields:

  • Name — The dish name as it appears on your menu. Keep it clear and recognizable. For example, "Margherita Pizza" is better than "Pizza #3."
  • Description — A short sentence or two describing the dish. Mention key ingredients or preparation style. Customers use this to decide what to order, so be specific: "Wood-fired with San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil" tells them much more than "Classic pizza."
  • Price — Enter the price as a number. The currency symbol is added automatically based on your locale settings.
  • Category — Group your items into categories like "Appetizers," "Main Courses," "Desserts," or "Drinks." Categories help customers browse your menu quickly. You can create new categories as you add items.
  • Photo — Upload a photo of the dish. This is the most important part of your digital menu. See our photo upload guide for tips on taking great food photos.

Tips for Great Menu Items

The best digital menus share a few common traits:

  • Consistent naming — Use the same style across all items. If you capitalize every word in one name, do the same for all of them.
  • Concise descriptions — Two sentences is usually enough. Highlight what makes the dish special rather than listing every ingredient.
  • Accurate prices — Double-check that your digital menu prices match your physical menu. Customers notice discrepancies.
  • Good photos — Even a smartphone photo in good lighting makes a big difference. Our AI enhancement will improve contrast, color, and sharpness automatically.

Saving and Publishing

After filling in all the fields and uploading a photo, click "Save". Your item is immediately added to your menu. If you are on the 3D Menu Pro plan, you will also see an option to generate a 3D model of the dish after saving.

New items are active by default, which means they appear on your public menu right away. If you want to prepare several items before going live, you can mark items as inactive and activate them all at once later.

You can edit or remove any item at any time from the menu management page on your dashboard.
